HOW
TO
USE AN AUTOMATIC (DIAL) TELEPHONE
To
olace a
caH
remove
the receiver
and
listen for
the
"dial tone".
When
you
hear it,
dial
each figure of
the
number
you
are calling.
To
dial
ola·ce
your
finger
in
the
dial
opening
over
the
figure wanted
and
turn the
dial
clockwise
until
your
finger strikes the finger stop.
Then
remove
your
finqer
and
allow
the dial to turn back.
Do
not
touch
the
dial
while
it
is
returning.
After
you
have
dialed
you
will
hear either the
"ringing signal"
or
the "busy signal

If
you
have
repeated trouble dialing a
number,
then
call
the operator
and
she

assist
you.
TO
CALL
ANOTHER
PARTY
ON
YOUR
LINE
To
call
a party
on
your
own
line
do
not
dial
the
listed
number
of the other party, but
dial

the
last figure
of
your
own
number
and
the last figure of
the
number
you
are calling.
After
you
have
dialed this special
number,
hang
up
your
receiver.
Your
bell,
as
well
as the
bell
of
the
telephone
you
are calling,
will
then ring.
When
your
bell
stops
ringing
it indicates
that
the called telephone
has
been
answered.
If
no
one
answers, disconnect
by
lifting
your
receiver
for
a
few
seconds
and
then re-
placing
it.
TONES
AND
SIGNALS
Dial
Tone-A
continuous, steady
hum,
the signal
to start dialing.
Ringing
Signal-A
\'burr-rr-ing" tone, repeated
at
regular intervals.
Busy
Signal-A
steady "buzz-buzz-buzz" tone.
Voice
Recordinq
Signal-A
short,
high
"beep'' tot.e
heard
on
the telephone
line
about
every
15 seconds
indicates
that
the
person
with
whom
you
are talking
is
recording
your
conversation
by
means
of
hls
voice
recording
machine
connected
to
the telephone
line.
This
siqnal
is
provided
by
the Telephone
Company
for
your
protection.
If
you
do
not want a record made
of
your
conversation, ask the
person
with
whom
you
are talking to disconnect the recording unit.
When
he
disconnects
his
recorder the signal
is
no
longer
heard.
The
"beep"
is
produced automatically
by
a
device
used
to connect the recorder
to
the telephone
line.
Use
of
a recorder wtthout the signal
is
contr"ary to
the
provisions
contained
in
the
Company
's tariff cover-
ing
voice
recorder connector equipment.
